Becoming an SMSM Guardian requires more than simply volunteering—it calls for faith, maturity, sound judgment, and a sincere desire to serve others. Guardians must be practicing Catholics who respect the teachings of the Church, support parish leadership, and understand that this ministry is rooted in Christian service. We seek individuals who are dependable, observant, calm under pressure, respectful, discreet, and able to work effectively as part of a team.
Because Guardians may be entrusted with sensitive information, safety responsibilities, and access to vulnerable members of the community, applicants must successfully complete all required background screening and should not have a criminal history that would conflict with the trust, integrity, or responsibilities of the ministry. Each applicant is evaluated carefully and fairly as part of the discernment and approval process.
Prospective Guardians begin by completing an application and participating in a personal interview. Candidates must receive pastoral approval, complete diocesan safe-environment requirements, and sign all required ministry documents, including confidentiality, conduct, and liability agreements. Once accepted, new members receive orientation and practical training in hospitality, situational awareness, communication, emergency response, medical incidents, de-escalation, and coordination with clergy, parish leaders, ushers, and first responders.
Guardians are expected to remain active, attend required meetings and training, communicate regularly with their Team Lead, and fulfill the ministry’s minimum monthly service commitment. Professional experience in law enforcement, the military, medicine, emergency services, security, or leadership is valuable, but it is not required. Character comes first. We seek practicing Catholics who are teachable, trustworthy, spiritually grounded, and willing to place service above recognition while helping create a safe, welcoming, and prayerful environment for everyone.
