At St. Peter and St. Paul Catholic Church, SMSM Guardians provide trained, coordinated support during medical emergencies, safety incidents, disruptive behavior, evacuations, and other unexpected situations. Guardians assess the circumstances, provide immediate assistance within the scope of their training, notify parish leadership, contact emergency services when necessary, and help guide police, fire, or medical personnel to the appropriate location. They also assist with crowd management, scene safety, communication, documentation, and the care of parishioners until professional responders arrive.
SMSM also conducts advance safety assessments for large parish events, including processions, parades, carnivals, festivals, retreats, and special liturgies. These assessments may include reviewing entrances and exits, emergency-access routes, traffic and pedestrian flow, crowd capacity, medical-aid locations, communication plans, evacuation procedures, vehicle placement, lighting, and other potential hazards. Guardians work with clergy, parish staff, ministry leaders, ushers, event organizers, and first responders to identify concerns and develop practical safety plans before an event begins.
As part of its prevention and preparedness mission, SMSM evaluates the parish property for crime risks, security weaknesses, and opportunities to improve access control, lighting, visibility, and the protection of people and property. Guardians receive continuing instruction in situational awareness, de-escalation, emergency communication, medical response, evacuation, and active-threat preparedness. Through active-shooter training and realistic emergency exercises conducted with law-enforcement professionals, SMSM strengthens its ability to respond calmly, support first responders, protect vulnerable individuals, and help the parish recover from a critical incident.
